HS - HIGH STANDARD

Certification of superior quality extra virgin olive oil (CSQA Certificate of product conformity n. 213 of 31.08.1999 – Production Technical Regulations n. DTP 009 Ed. 1 – "HS" extra virgin olive oil). WHAT IS HS?

HS is the first quality certification in the world within the olive oil sector, that analytically ascertains the superior quality standard of extra virgin olive oil. It therefore refers to the actual product (rules: UNI CEI EN 45011, UNI CEI 70006 e 70014) and not to the production system (rules: ISO 9000).

Its high quality standards are analyzed and checked during each phase, as a consequence HS guarantees an objective, definite and verified quality, that leaves out of consideration subjective or fanciful elements.

Since HS - High Standard is a system available to any firm which may request it and that accepts its rules, it therefore assumes the value and relevance of a new product category for high range oil which can be applied also to products which have been certified with denomination of origin (DOP and IGP) and which come from Organic farming.

The inspection and correspondence of quality declared is carried out by the CSQA – Agro-food Certification of Quality, that is by the first Italian body internationally recognised for the supervision of quality conformity of the products in the food sector, accredited by the European Cooperation for Accreditation through the National Body SINCERT.

BIOAGRICERT REGULATED CERTIFICATIONS

Organic farming

Organic farming is a form of agriculture that does not use synthesis chemicals (fertilizers, herbicides, anti-cryptogamics, insecticides and pesticides in general), nor Genetically Modified Organisms (OGM). The protection of the crops is carried out first of all by adopting precautionary measures, selecting species which are resistant to disease and using suitable farming practices such as, for example

  • Crop rotation – Cultivation of the same plant on the same land for various seasons in succession is avoided. Thus, on the one hand parasites are prevented from finding a favourable environment to proliferate, and on the other hand the nutritive properties are used in a more rational and less intensive way;
  • Planting of hedges and trees – Landscape is recreated, giving hospitality to the natural predators of parasites and providing a natural barrier to possible external pollution;
  • Combination – Different plants are cultivated at the same time, one disagreeable to the parasites of the other .

In organic farming, natural fertilizes such as manure, other composted organic substances (swath, etc) and green manure are used, or rather plants such as clover or mustard are planted in the ground.

If necessary, in order to protect the crops, vegetable, animal or mineral natural substances are used: plant extracts, useful insects that kill the parasites, rock flour or natural minerals to correct the structure and chemical characteristics of the soil and to protect the crops from the cryptogams.
If any intervention to protect the crops from parasites and other adversities, should become necessary, the farmer can only use natural substances that have been expressly authorized by the European Regulations (according to the criteria of the so called “positive list”)

NOP – USA National Organic Program Rules

The NOP (National Organic Program) is the regulatory framework governing organic food in force in the United States made law by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) on 22 October 2002.
It provides that all the ingredients of products labelled as “USA” organic must be certified NOP. Therefore this certification is compulsory both for firms that wish to export their product directly to the United States and for the firms that provide raw ingredients destined to a processed product to be exported to the USA.

DENOMINATION OF PROTECTED ORIGIN

The "Denomination of Protected Origin" (DOP) is a mark of origin that applies to those foods whose special quality characteristics dependessentially on the area they are produced in. The geographical environment includes both natural elements (climate, environmental characteristics) and human elements (farming practices which have been handed down in time, craft, savoir-faire) that combined together, enable to obtain a product which is inimitable outside a certain production area. The DOP mark applies to those products for which the entire production, transformation and elaboration process must take place within a delimitated geographical area.

Those who produce DOP foods must follow the strict production rules establishedin the production regulations, and the keeping of these rules is guaranteed by a specific supervisor body
